    Spacelike hypersurfaces in standard static spacetimes

    In this work we study spacelike hypersurfaces immersed in spatially open standard static spacetimes with complete spacelike slices. Under appropriate lower bounds on the Ricci curvature of the spacetime in directions tangent to the slices, we prove that every complete CMC hypersurface having either bounded hyperbolic angle or bounded height is maximal. Our conclusions follow from general mean curvature estimates for spacelike hypersurfaces. In case where the spacetime is a Lorentzian product with spatial factor of nonnegative Ricci curvature and sectional curvatures bounded below, we also show that a complete maximal hypersurface not intersecting a spacelike slice is itself a slice. This result is obtained from a gradient estimate for parametric maximal hypersurfaces.Comment: 50 page

    The author observed seven species of Euscorpius in 1999–2005 (E. alpha, E. sicanus, E. tergestinus, E. concinnus, E. naupliensis, E. italicus, and E. flavicaudis) in their natural environment, mainly in Italy but also in France, Switzerland, and Greece. Ecology of these species is discussed as well as predatory behavior occasionally observed in nature. This work provides new data on the distribution and ecology of European Euscorpiidae

    The author found syntopic specimens of Euscorpius italicus and E. tergestinus inside and nearby an abandoned fortress in Verona Province, Veneto, Italy. This discovery highlights a possibility of coexistence of congeneric species not only in the same territory, as already observed, but also in the same habitat and microhabitat, bringing some interesting questions about interspecific competition within the genus Euscorpius

    Additive manufacturing of silicon carbide by selective laser sintering of PA12 powders and polymer infiltration and pyrolysis

    Abstract In this work, we propose a novel hybrid additive manufacturing technique, which combines selective laser sintering (SLS) of polyamide powders and subsequent preceramic polymer infiltration and pyrolysis to manufacture Silicon Carbide components for complex architectures. By controlling the porosity of the sintered polymeric preform we are able to control the shrinkage upon the first infiltration and pyrolysis. This enabled the manufacturing of smaller features than those achievable with other manufacturing techniques. The mechanical strength of the resulting ceramic increased with the number of reinfiltration cycles up to 24 MPa, inversely the residual porosity decreased to 10 vol%. The microstructure showed two distinct phases of SiOC and SiC. The first was attributed to the interaction between the porous polyamide and the ceramic precursor during the first infiltration.     Governing the bairro clandestino of Cova da Moura (1974–2015): Decentred and collaborative governance in an informal neighbourhood in Lisbon’s metropolitan area

    Cova da Moura was established in the municipality of Amadora in the mid-1970s as a bairro clandestino (‘informal’ or ‘illegal neighbourhood’). Since then, it has grown into a community of thousands of residents; having escaped the large rehousing operations of the 1990s, Cova da Moura is today one of the few surviving bairros clandestinos in the metropolitan area of Lisbon, as well as a ‘distressed urban area’. In the four decades of its life, Cova da Moura has passed through different eras of policymaking, and has been the object of a variety of public interventions. The article provides a critical assessment of the Iniciativa Bairros Críticos (Critical Neighbourhoods Initiative, 2005–2013), as an example of a policy initiative embodying a normative vision of collaborative governance. The case of the Iniciativa Bairros Críticos in Cova da Moura provides some lessons on how collaborative governance design can address key challenges that ‘distressed urban areas’ pose to public intervention – but at the same time shows us the unavoidable pitfalls of the process, as well as the limits of their reach vis-à-vis broad, structural issues.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Concerning energy improvement of existing façades, a favourable system involves prefabricated multilayer panels, made of internal insulation core and outer textile reinforced concrete layers. It is a convincing alternative to external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) and ventilated façades, and it meets all the requirements for façade systems. The main advantage is the possibility to apply the panel using a crane, without any scaffolding. The paper considers two solutions: the former uses expanded polystyrene (EPS) as insulating material; the latter substitutes EPS with an innovative green insulation material made of inorganic diatomite. The paper aims at comparing the solutions in terms of mechanical properties of the components and behaviour of the composite sandwich at lab-scale level. Numerical models, previously calibrated, will be instrumental for the discussion
